Death Penalty Against Child Bride Who Killed Her 'Husband' With Rat Poison

A 14-year-old Nigerian girl accused of murdering her 35-year-old husband by putting rat poison in his food could face the death penalty, Nigerian prosecutors said Thursday.

The trial of Wasila Tasi'u, from a poor northern Nigeria family, has sparked a heated debate on the role of underage marriage in the conservative Muslim region, especially whether an adolescent girl can consent to be a bride.

Prosecutors at the High Court in Gezawa, outside Nigeria's second city of Kano, filed an amended complaint that charged Tasi'u with one count of murder over the killing of Umar Sani two weeks after their April wedding in the village of Unguwar Yansoro.

Lead prosecutor Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki said that if convicted, the charge is "punishable with death" and indicated the state would seek the maximum penalty.

Activists, including in Nigeria's mainly Christian south, have called for Tasi'u's immediate release, saying she should be rehabilitated as a victim and noting the prospect that she was raped by the man she married.

The affected families have denied that Tasi'u was forced into marriage, arguing that girls across the impoverished region marry at 14 and that Tasi'u and Sani followed the traditional system of courtship.

According to Nigeria's marriage act, anyone under 21 can marry provided they have parental consent and so evidence of an agreement between Tasi'u and her father Tasiu Mohammed could undermine claims of a forced union.

But defence lawyer Hussaina Aliyu has insisted the case is not a debate about the role of youth marriage in a Muslim society.

Instead, she has argued that under criminal law a 14-year-old cannot be charged with murder in a high court and has demanded that the case be moved to the juvenile system.

Iran executes woman who killed her alleged rapist

An Iranian woman convicted of murder -- in a killing human rights groups called self-defense against her rapist -- was hanged Saturday, state news agency IRNA reported.

Reyhaneh Jabbari, 26, was sentenced to death for the 2007 killing of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a former employee of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security.

The United Nations has said she never received a fair trial.

Her execution was originally scheduled for September 30, but was postponed. Amnesty International said the delay may have been in response to the public outcry against the execution.

Jabbari was convicted of murder after "a flawed investigation and unfair trial," according to Amnesty International.

The U.N. has said Sarbandi hired Jabbari -- then a 19-year-old interior designer -- to work on his office. She stabbed him after he sexually assaulted her, the U.N. has said.

Jabbari was held in solitary confinement without access to her lawyer and family for two months, Amnesty International said in a statement. She was tortured during that time.

According to Regina Askia, the nurses who volunteered are currently undergoing Ebola trainings.
The mother of 3 shared this on her facebook page- “My job was looking for Nurses to volunteer for the Ebola center which was moved from our building to another location. My male colleagues said they would do it for 200 dollars per hour, ….C’mon Regina , gotta get on the team…they said. I was not smiling (I am captain of my 3 kid team). Not one female nurse volunteered (lol). We ALL had to demonstrate proper use of PPE equipment and be proficient with the Ebola protocol. I was full of thoughts as I watched the display, hoods, masks, gowns, boots….almost like a nightmare. Home news had it that Nigerians washed their hands, didn’t hug as much, monitored their temps and on the first signs of malaise drank the ORT (oral rehydration therapy) until symptoms passed. 3 Others Quarantined After First Ebola Case In New York City

Officials tried to tamp down New Yorkers' fears Friday after a doctor was diagnosed with Ebola in a city where millions of people squeeze into crowded subways, buses and elevators every day.

We want to state at the outset that New Yorkers have no reason to be alarmed" by the doctor's diagnosis Thursday, said Mayor Bill de Blasio, even as officials described Dr. Craig Spencer riding the subway, taking a cab and bowling since returning to New York from Guinea a week ago. "New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk."

Heath officials have repeatedly given assurances that the disease is spread only by direct contact with bodily fluids such as saliva, blood, vomit and feces, and that the virus survives on dry surfaces for only a matter of hours.

But some New Yorkers were not taking any chances.

Friday morning, a group of teenage girls in Catholic school uniforms riding the L subway train passed around a bottle of hand sanitizer. They said they were taking extra precautions because of the Ebola case. It was one of the subway lines the doctor rode after returning home.

The governor and health officials said Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders, sought treatment with diarrhea and a 100.3-degree fever — not 103 as officials initially reported Thursday night. The health department blamed a transcription error for the incorrect information. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center.

Health officials have been tracing Spencer's contacts to identify anyone who may be at risk. The city's health commissioner, Mary Bassett, said Spencer's fiancee and two friends had been quarantined but showed no symptoms.

Neighborhood residents attacked the driver of an ice cream truck after it struck and killed a 7-year-old boy riding a motorized bike in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The child had been riding alongside the truck on Wednesday when he apparently slipped for an unknown reason and was caught under a rear wheel, police Sgt. Timothy Colson said.

The collision was an accident and the driver, who's name was not released sustained bruises in the beating.

The driver told police that bricks were thrown at his truck and someone threatened him with a knife. He was taken to a police station for protection while the Police searched for the attackers.

The child died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said Officer Nuria Venegas, a Los Angeles police spokeswoman.

"I walked outside and he was on the ground, bleeding," Karen Black, who lives in the neighborhood, told KCAL-TV. "I just tried to comfort the family, you know, because they were hollering and screaming."

Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter identified the child as Jamarion Thomas.

Bodies Of 3 Teenagers who went missing November 20, 1970 formally identified

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Oklahoma authorities have formally identified six people whose bodies were found in a western Oklahoma lake in 2013, bringing a resolution to missing persons mysteries that spanned decades, a spokeswoman for the state medical examiner said Thursday.

The bodies were found in September 2013 when Oklahoma Highway Patrol divers stumbled upon two mud and rust-covered vehicles feet apart at the bottom of Foss Lake during tests of new sonar equipment. Each car contained three bodies.

The cause of death for all six was determined to be probable drowning as the result of an accident, spokeswoman Amy Elliott said.The confirmation of identities solves the mystery surrounding the disappearance of three Oklahoma teenagers, who went missing Nov. 20, 1970, while on their way to attend a football game in Elk City, Oklahoma.

Jimmy Allen Williams, 16, Leah Gail Johnson, 18, and Thomas Michael Rios, 18, all of Sayre, were found in a 1969 Camaro.

Three adults reported missing from Canute, Oklahoma in 1969 were recovered from a 1952 Chevrolet and identified using DNA testing, Elliott said. The three have been identified as John Alva Porter, 69, of Elk City, Cleburn Hammack, 42, of Sayre, and Nora Marie Duncan, 58, of Canute, she said.

The two cars were found about three feet apart in about 12 feet of water near the lake's main concrete boat dock. A road narrows into the dock, which authorities said may explain how the vehicles ended up in the water.

President Goodluck Jonathan Reshuffles Cabinet

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria has partially reshuffled his cabinet to fill the space created by the exit of seven ministers who resigned to seek elective offices in different state.
The ministers were said to have left the cabinet on October 20 in line with the mandate of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The cabinet reshuffle was announced on yesterday after the Federal Executive Council Meeting held in Abuja and presided over by President Jonathan.
Among the Ministers who were reshuffled is the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Nurudeen Mohammed, who will now be overseeing the Ministry of Information. He said, while addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, that, the Minister of State I, Foreign Affairs, Professor Viola Onwuliri, had been moved to Education while the Minister of State, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan would oversee the Minister of Health.
He also added that The Minister of Special Duties, Mr Kabiru Turaki, is to oversee the Ministry of Labour and Productivity  while the Minister of Defence, Mr Aliyu Guasu, will combine his duties with those of the Minister of State, Defence.
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Dr. Stephen Oru, will combine his responsibilities with those of the Minister of State, Defence vacated by Dr. Darius Ishaku; the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, will combine his duties with those of the Minister of State previously held by Samuel Ortom.
Dr Mohammed said that the ministers appointed to supervise other ministries were to act in the capacity pending when substantive ministers would be named.

5 Dead, 12 Others Injured In Bauchi Bomblast

5 People have been confirmed dead in Azare Motor Park area of Bauchi State after a vehicle loaded with explosive devices went off.
 The Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Haruna Muhammad, who confirmed the incident, said the explosion occurred at 9:45PM yesterday.
The dead victims were said to have been burnt beyond recognition while the 12 others injured are being attended to at the Federal Medical Center, Azare.
Mr. Haruna Muhammad adds that the scene of the incident has been cordoned off by a Police Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit. And Although, nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast, last night’s incident is about the third time Azare Town has come under attack from Boko Haram terrorists.

Tired, Tense: Pistorius Survives First Night Of Five-Year Jail Term

According to NBC News this morning, Oscar Pistorius spent his first night of a five-year jail term in a single cell in the hospital wing of a prison in the capital, Pretoria, said a prison official.He seemed confused and tired when he entered the Kgosi Mampuru facility, prison commissioner Zebilon Monama told the South African Press Association. Monama said Pistorius was tense as wardens took his fingerprints and the prison chaplain met with him soon after his prison number was issued on Tuesday."After he saw the chaplain our psychologist went to see him just to try to talk to him," said Monama. Pistorius had a medical examination before being locked in his cell in a separate wing of the prison where the double amputee Paralympian joins eight other inmates with disabilities and will be under routine 24-hour observations with two nurses on duty.

Shooting At Canada War Memorial And Parliament

Gunfire echoes in Canada at the country's capital today at about 10am as a gunman opens fire in the building shooting one soldier. The attack is said to be the second one in the country since this week. Though no one was killed in the first. The Parliament and Police buildings are on lock down at the moment and the Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has been evacuated. Police are still going through the building to make sure the place is safe. Shortly after 1pm, the soldier shot at the entrance was confirmed dead. While two patients are being treated at the Ottawa hospital. Gunman was also shot dead.

Jonathan Dedicates WHO 'Ebola-Free' Declaration To Health Workers

Channels television reports earlier today that President Goodluck Jonathan has dedicated the declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) that Nigeria is now officially Ebola-free to the many patriotic health workers, volunteers and ordinary Nigerians who worked tirelessly to contain the Ebola Virus Disease.
The WHO Ebola-free certification came on Monday, 42 days after the last case of the Ebola Virus Disease was reported.
Nigeria recorded six more deaths after the index Ebola patient, a Liberian-American man, Patrick Sawyer died on July 25.
Most of the dead were health workers, who President Jonathan said paid “the ultimate price, to stop the deadly virus in its track”.
A statement by the spokesman for the President, Dr Ruben Abati, said President Jonathan also reiterated his appreciation of the contributions of state governments, WHO and other international health organisations, relatives of infected persons and other Nigerians, who either courageously underwent the rigors of being quarantined or complied with all directives issued by health authorities to defeat the virus.
 “Nigeria’s globally-acclaimed success against Ebola is a testimony to what Nigerians can achieve if they set aside their differences and work together,” President Jonathan said.
He called on Nigerians to strive to replicate the unity of purpose and the “all-hands-on-deck approach” adopted against Ebola in other areas of national life.

Several nations had applauded Nigeria’s success in containing the virus disease that had killed over 4,400 persons since outbreak started in March, but President Jonathan, however, warned that the entire country must remain fully alert and vigilant against the re-entry of the virus.
In its declaration statement, the WHO had warned that while “we have won a battle against Ebola, the war will only truly end when West Africa, Africa and the world are declared free of Ebola,”a view that president Jonathan also emphasized
The President consequently directed that all the anti-Ebola measures taken after the entry of the virus into Nigeria should remain in place and that health officials should continue to actively screen persons entering the country through its air, land and sea borders for any sign of the virus.
He also urged all Nigerians to continue to follow the anti-Ebola  advisories on sanitation and personal hygiene issued by Federal and State Health authorities.

Nigeria Not Affected By U.S Airports Restrictions

The Ebola virus is taking another turn on the U.S government as travelers from the most affected countries in West Africa have been restricted to entry through only five airports in the country.
Homeland Security Secretary Jen Johnson announced on Tuesday that starting Wednesday, passengers traveling from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea can only gain entry through the international airports in New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago and Newark, New Jersey - which account for 94% of all incoming travelers from those countries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Negotiations Ongoing For The Release Of The Chibok Girls.

According to sources, negotiations are in process for the safe release of the Chibok Girls who were abducted from their schools in April 2014.
Following an agreement made earlier in the week by the Nigerian government and Boko Haram to ceasefire, it is reported that if negotiations are concluded, there is a possible chance of the girls being released.
State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said;
'We can confirm reports that a ceasefire has been announced, (and) appears to have been put in place'.
'We would welcome that ceasefire, call on all parties both to implement and maintain such a ceasefire, and hope that such a ceasefire would herald the return of peace to the northeast'.
'This is a region that has far too little of that'.
However, Harf added that Washington understood the arrangement to mean that 'the negotiations about a deal to release the girls continue'.

Total's CEO dies in bizzarre plane crash

French Oil company Total's CEO died after his plane collided with a snowplow on the runway at Moscow international airport.
Russian officials said the snowplow's driver was inebriated. Along with CEO Christophe de Margerie, three other members of the plane's crew were also found dead at the scene of the accident.
